Here are some examples:
Streaming a video to your online students:
You have been teaching a face-to-face class on Working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Young Children. In that class, you use the EdPro Starting Points video: Getting your Message Across. As you design your online version of this class, you would like your distance students to view segments from the video online. This new online course will be in the catalog for at least the next three years. You expect to offer it twice a year, with at last 25 students per section. Your media services can make a digital video file and host it on your school server via Blackboard.
3 Years streaming rights for Getting Your Message Across = $ 382
Number of students who will be using this streaming video: 25 student per section x 2 sections per year x 3 years = 150 students
Cost to stream per student: $382 divided by 150 students = $2.54 per student.
Providing Loaner DVDs to distance learning students as part of course materials
You would like the 30 student in your cohort to be able to view the complete Reframing Discipline series as a resource for your practicum class. But you know that some of the students do not have the capacity for watching video online and will not be able to come to the college library to view it. With the loaner DVD digital rights option, you can send each student the Reframing Discipline DVDs to watch at their own pace. Students will need to return the DVDs to you at the end of class. Your distance learning tech support has the resources to make DVD copies. You will include the DVD cost as part of the course materials fee.
1 Year Duplication Rights for the Reframing Discipline series = $534.60
Cost to provide Loaner DVDs: $534.60 x 30 students = $17.82 per student
