Applicability of EdPro Courses

1. What type of credit do the courses provide?
In general, our courses provide credits for teachers or caregiver continuing professional development. Depending on the partner college or university, courses can provide: undergraduate elective credit, graduate elective credit, graduate professional development credit, graduate workshop credit, professional development units, continuing education units, CEUs, and clock hours. Institutions have different ways to describe their course credit. To find out more about course credit, check the partner links on each course description page. And be sure to check with your state or local licensing agent, before enrolling, to determine what kind of credits fit your professional development needs.

2. I want to take this course for CEU credit.
You may take the courses for CEUs through several of our partner institutions or directly through EdPro.

EdPro has partnered with Professional Academic Review Council (PARC) to offer each course for 1 CEU or 10 clock hours of credit. This means that our courses have met strict, research-based criteria and guidelines for continuing education and training, as developed by International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET). Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of completion from Professional Academic Review Council (PARC). PARC is an authorized provider of IACET CEUs.

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) was created by IACET as a measurement of continuing education. One (1) IACET CEU is equal to ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. See www.iacet.org for more information.

3. Is the training approved for teacher recertification?
Every state has its own requirements for licensing and recertification. It is strongly recommended that you check with your state or local licensing agent, before enrolling, to make sure the courses fit your professional development needs.

4. How do these courses fit into key early childhood education standards and practices?
Relevant content in each course targets topics needed for credentialing and/or to meet key performance standards and outcomes. A list of the standards and practices addressed by each course is included with the course materials. Courses address standards for the following:

  • Council for Professional Recognition: Child Development Associate
  • Head Start Performance Standards
  • NAEYC Standards for Early Childhood Professional Preparation
  • Quality Standards for NAFCC Accreditation
  • Council for Exceptional Children, Division of Early Childhood

5. Do these courses meet the requirements for maintaining ASHA certification?
See the ASHA website at www.asha.org/about/membership-certification/certification/fact_basics.htm for a fact sheet on ASHA Certification Maintenance: Basic Requirements for Maintaining the Certificate of Clinical Competence. And www.asha.org/about/membership-certification/certification/fact_def.htm for a fact sheet on Certification Maintenance: Definition of Professional Development and Acceptable Activities.

EdPro courses offered through our partners, either as academic credits or IACET CEUs, appear to fall under the definition and meet the ASHA requirements. It is up to the certified professional to determine what is acceptable for your professional development. You do not need pre-approval from ASHA for the professional development activities you choose.

5. How are the courses graded?
Most courses can be taken for a letter grade or Pass/No Pass. Be sure to indicate what type of grading you need when you enroll. Back to top

6. How is the course set up?
Once you have registered, you will receive a course guide and workbook, plus a loaner VHS tape, DVD, or CD-ROM (for The Power of Positive Communicaiton course only).

The course is self-paced. You complete the assignments on your own timeline. All assignments are returned at the same time, along with the loaner video, DVD, or CD-ROM, for a final grade. For all courses, except The Power of Positive Communication, noted below, a written narrative in the course workbook guides learners through a series of assignments that include watching video segments, doing learning activities, reflections, video observations, practice exercises, readings and developing action plans. The final assignment is a short reading and paper. Those taking the course for CEUs do not have a final paper.

See the individual course descripition pages for the learning goals, syllabus, sample assignments and video from each course.

The Power of Positive Communication course is delivered via a highly interactive CD-ROM, with a supporting guide and workbook. Students work through learnng sessions on the CD-ROM, completing action plans, reflection questions and practice activities. Learners type in responses for the assignments direclty on the computer. These responses are saved on your computer, and then printed out for return to EdPro for grading. Some outside assignments are required in addition to the CD-ROM activities. See the Power of Positive Communication course description page for more information.

7. What types of assignments are required?
There are no quizzes or test, so most assignments require either completing a list, filling in a chart, giving brief answers or writing from one or two sentences to a page. The final assignment requires reading of 30 to 40 pages, plus three to five pages of writing, depending on the credit earned.

8. How much outside work?
Occasionally, you are asked to talk with a colleague or friend and write about your discussion. You may also be asked to do a short observation of children, or try an activity with a child, and record your observations. However, you do not need to be in a classroom setting to complete these activities. Courses may also include a short assignment that asks for outside research on a topic via the internet or magazine or newspaper articles. And 1-credit courses require outside reading of 30 to 40 pages, plus a final three to five page paper.

9. Do I need to be in the classroom environment to complete these courses?
All of our course assignments include options for students who are not currently in a classroom or child care setting. You may be able to draw on present or previous experience in the classroom, in child care situations, volunteer positions or family experiences to help you complete some of the assignments.

10. Does the outside reading come with the course materials?
Each college course requires an outside book or magazine article reading. Some courses require a book that must be purchased and others have articles included in the coursework at no additional fee. Check the individual course syllabus on the course description pages for specific reading assignments.

11. How long will it take me to complete the course?
The time it takes to complete the course depends on the individual student's learning style. It also depends on the partner institution's particular academic requirements. Generally, a one-quarter-credit course is designed to take, on average, 10 hours to complete the core content, plus additional time for outside activities, research, readings and a final paper.

Some students accelerate their efforts, preferring to finish the courses well before deadlines. Others complete the course at a more leisurely pace. The length of a school term is more than enough time to accommodate the requirements of these courses.

12. Who is the instructor of record?
Instructors of record are professionals with deep experience, both teaching young children and training adults. Each partner institution has also certified instructor's credentials. Information about each instructor is listed in the course materials. Or read more about our instructors of record here.
